SRINAGAR: On Tuesday afternoon, a fourth-grade student drowned in the River Jhelum near Noorbagh, Srinagar, while trying to retrieve a cricket ball from the water.

An official said that Muneer Ahmad Khanday (12), son of Mohd Maqbool Khanday, slipped into the River Jhelum at Noorbagh in the afternoon.

He added that the boy slipped while retrieving a cricket ball. “Muneer, a Class 4 student, was rescued and taken to SMHS for treatment, where doctors declared him dead.”

Meanwhile, locals in the area have demanded proper fencing to prevent such incidents in the future.”
