SRINAGAR: Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Dr Moulvi Mohammad Umar Farooq on Sunday backed the proposal to examine a five-day school week in Jammu and Kashmir, saying the wellbeing and mental health of children should remain central to the education system.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a Grand Seerah Competition at the historic Jama Masjid in Srinagar, Mirwaiz said children need time beyond academics to rest, play and spend time with their families.
“Our children need time not only to study, but also to rest, spend time with their families, play and grow in a healthy and balanced manner. Their mental health and overall wellbeing must remain at the heart of education,” he said.
Mirwaiz was also appreciative of the participation of around 2,800 boys and girls from maktabs across different districts in the Seerah competition.
He described the gathering at the Jama Masjid as a heartening sight, saying the participation reflected the interest of children in learning about the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad.
He appreciated Maktab Maseeh-ul-Ummah and the Mirwaiz Foundation for organising the programme, saying such initiatives help connect the younger generation with the teachings of the Prophet, particularly values of faith, compassion, good character and service to humanity.
“At a time when our children and youth are facing many social, emotional and moral challenges, it is extremely important that they remain connected with the Seerah of the Prophet, which offers guidance for every aspect of life,” Mirwaiz said.
He congratulated the participating children, teachers, parents and organisers and expressed hope that such programmes would continue to encourage learning, good character and a deeper understanding of Islamic teachings among the younger generation.
