SRINAGAR: Dr Ghulam Sibtain Masoodi, father-in-law of Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Dr Molvi Mohammad Umar Farooq, passed away late last night after a prolonged illness. He was 80. His funeral prayers (Nimaz-e-Janaza) will be offered at Jama Masjid Srinagar after Zuhr prayers, following which he will be laid to rest at his ancestral graveyard in Khrew, Pampore. Condolences (Taziyat) will be received at his residence, House No. 207, Sector B, Westend Colony, near Tengpora Bridge, Hyderpora, Srinagar.

Originally from Khrew in Pulwama, Dr Masoodi had lived in Sanat Nagar, Srinagar. A well-respected medical professional, he spent 28 years of his life in the United States, having left the Valley in 1974 for further studies in medicine. He specialised in geriatric medicine. Recalling his journey, he once said that his parents insisted on his higher education abroad, ensuring their children received the best opportunities. When he left for the US, he was already married and had a six-year-old child.
Dr Masoodi came from a distinguished family. His father was a Unani doctor, while his mother, the highest-qualified woman in her area at the time, was a teacher who established a school for girls that was later recognised by the government. He pursued his early education in Pulwama until the fifth standard before moving to MP School in Khan-i-Kahi Moula. He then studied at SP College and later graduated from Government Medical College, Srinagar.
Apart from his medical career, Dr Masoodi was also a hotelier and an industrialist.
