SRINAGAR: Mirwaiz Umer Farooq was again placed under house arrest and not allowed to deliver Friday sermon at the historic Jamia Masjid in Srinagar for second week in a row, Anjuman Auqaf.
Anjuman Auqaf in a statement said that the authorities placed Mirwaiz under house arrest and did not allow him to visit Jamia Masjid.
Mirwaiz’s movement, it said, has been fully restricted since Friday last, while media representatives have also been barred from meeting with him.
“Mirwaiz was again not allowed to offer Friday prayers and deliver the sermon at central Jamia Masjid Srinagar. This is the second consecutive Friday when he has not been allowed to visit Jamia Masjid. In fact Mirwaiz’s movement has been completely curbed since last Friday, while media persons have also been prevented from meeting him,” the spokesman added.
Anjuman expressed concern over the continuous detention of the religious leader, particularly his absence from Jama Masjid on Fridays, calling it deeply upsetting but necessary in current circumstances.
It hoped for relief through the upcoming high court hearing on May 25th regarding Mirwaiz’s complete release from house arrest.
