Hurriyat Conference (M) Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has appreciated the role of International Committee for Red Cross (ICRC) in connection with raising the problems faced by Kashmiri prisoners and for the rehabilitation of the released prisoners in Kashmir.

The Hurriyat chairman said, “The Kashmiris are satisfied with duties discharged by the ICRC in Kashmir during the past two decades.”

As per a statement a three member delegation of ICRC headed by Jean Fracois Sonnay met Mirwaiz at his Nageen residence and apprised him about the condition of hundreds of Kashmiri political prisoners lodged in Jammu and Kashmir and Indian jails.

“The APHC Chairman told the ICRC delegation that Kahsmiri prisoners lodged in Indian jails have to face lot of problems. They said that despite court orders Kashmiri prisoners were not produced in the courts on hearing dates. They said as a result their imprisonment period was being unnecessarily prolonged and their relatives too have to face torturous times,” the statement reads.

Mirwaiz has thanked ICRC for providing expenses to the families who have to travel to different parts of India to meet their prisoner relatives and for rehabilitating the former prisoners. He has said that due to unfavorable situation prevailing in valley, the relatives of the prisoners have to face lot of problems.

Mirwaiz asked the delegates that ICRC can play an important role in investigating the cases of thousands of disappeared persons and unmarked graves in Kashmir. He said that Kashmiris feel that ICRC should increase its effort to divert the attention of World community towards Kashmir so that problems faced by Kashmiris are alleviated.
