SRINAGAR: A minor boy, Umar Farooq son of  Farooq Ahmad Malik who was missing from his native village near Kupwara town has been found dead in Hanjipora village.

“The news has sent the whole village into instant mourning and anger. People are out on the streets and some are rushing towards Umar’s home,” residents accessed by phone said. “A group and young boys and elders have gone to the Hanjipora village to retrieve the body.”

The immediate crisis is the circulation of photographs of a charred body of a boy on social media. This body is being passed as that of Umar. Kashmir Life could not confirm the veracity of the photos.

Umar was a student of third primary in Usmania Public School in Kupwara town.

The boy went missing on Tuesday. Once the news of his disappearance spread in the area it triggered relentless protests and shutdown. “There was shutdown in Batergam and Gulgam villages today as well,” a local resident told Kashmir Life over the phone.

SSP Kupwara confirmed that the body of the minor was recovered from Hanjipora village. He said that SIT headed by ASP Kupwara has been constituted.  “A board of doctors will examine the postmortem and it will be video-graphed,” he said.“In this connection, a case FIR No. 192/2018 under section 302, 363 RPC has already been registered in police station Kupwara.”
