Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed,Thursday felicitated Justice Tirath Singh Thakur on being elevated as the 43rd Chief Justice of India (CJI).

He attended the oath-taking ceremony in the union capital where Justice Thakur was sworn in by President, Pranab Mukherjee, as the new Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

Mufti Sayeed said Justice Thakur’s elevation as Chief Justice is a matter of great pride for J&K state. “We are honoured that the son-of-the-soil Justice T S Thakur has taken over as the Chief Justice of India. I am sure his stint as the Chief Justice of the Apex Court will be eventful,” he said while showering accolades on Justice Thakur on assuming the highest judicial chair in the country.

Born in 1952 at Ramban, Justice Tirath Singh Thakur is the son of late D. D. Thakur, eminent advocate who later became High Court Judge and Deputy Chief Minister of the state.

Designated as Senior Advocate in 1990, Justice Thakur was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Jammu & Kashmir High Court on February 16, 1994. In September 1995, he was appointed as a Permanent Judge.

Justice Thakur was appointed as acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court on April 9, 2008 while as on August 11, 2008, he took over as the Chief Justice of Punjab & Haryana High Court.

On November 17, 2009, he was elevated to the Supreme Court of India.
