IPS officer S Asif Ibrahim has been cleared to be the first Muslim boss of the Intelligence Bureau (IB). He will be replacing Nehchal Sandhu who retires on December 31.

Asif, a 1977 batch IPS officer, made it to the top slot because of his wide range of experience in covering various departments of the organization, which mainly deal with intelligence pertaining to internal security, newspapers reported. Three officers senior to Asif have been given different assignments to pave way for his takeover. These include R N Gupta, Rajgopal, Yashovardhan Azad, all from 1976 batch.

Reports suggested the orders are being issued Monday as it has been already cleared by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh. Asif was Mufti Sayeed’s personal secretary when he was India’s home minister in 1990s.
