People’s Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday has appointed senior most leader and Member of Parliament, Muzaffar Hussain Beigh, as patron of the party.

PDP President Mehbooba Mufti chairing party meeting at her official residence in Srinagar on Monday, December 10, 2018.

Reports said the decision was taken today during a meeting headed by PDP President Mehbooba Mufti in Srinagar.

“Senior leaders of the party today (Monday) met under the chairmanship of party President @MehboobaMufti and Muzzafar Hussain Beigh Sahab,” the PDP said on its Twitter handle soon after the meeting.

Last month, Beigh, in a press conference, had said he was ready to join the third front led by Sajad Lone of Peoples’ Conference, a BJP ally. He had said Lone was like his son and PC was like his home.

Beigh accused PDP of taking a decision without consulting him when he was just a phone call away. He said his party offended MLAs as well as MLCs.

“The PDP betrayed the workers, denying them a chance to connect with the people, by boycotting the (municipal) elections. They left a vacuum and that space has now been occupied. Politics does not wait for people who boycott,” Beigh said.

The sources said the party took the decision not only to stop the trend of leaders leaving the party but also to secure votes in north Kashmir, where Beigh wields considerable influence.

Party sources said Ms mufti told in her speech that the party will continue to strive for the core ideology involving talks with Pakistan and engaging all the stakeholders.

She said the party will not cow down with some people feeling choked in the party and leaving. In fact, sources quoted her saying that the party has started with a few people and will continue to work with whoever wishes to stay and fight for the rights of the people. Anybody who wishes to leave should leave, she said.

From last couple of weeks former finance minister Dr Haseeb Drabu and other senior leaders have resigned from the party.

Earlier, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was the party patron until his death in January 2016. He was the founding president of the party when it was formed in 1999.
