Naib Tehsildar Among Two Revenue Officials Allegedly Assaulted By Police In JK

SRINAGAR: Two revenue officials, including a naib tehsildar, were allegedly subjected to assault by certain police personnel in the Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir. This incident led to a fervent protest by their fellow colleagues and clerical staff.

While senior officials remain reserved in their comments regarding this alleged incident, it transpired at the Sanasar hill resort late on Tuesday. Official sources confirm that a team led by the Ramban deputy commissioner visited the location to gather firsthand information.

According to sources of The Excelsior, the naib tehsildar and his subordinate patwari were purportedly roughed up and confined within their office at Sanasar by an agitated police party. The police were apparently incensed over the removal of some tents on a piece of land previously occupied by the force.

The sources further reveal that the police had sought the transfer of this land from the revenue department the previous year, but their application was denied. They were instructed to vacate the parcel. When the police failed to comply, revenue department employees seized the tents and boards installed by the police.

This incident triggered protests by revenue employees, culminating in a demonstration outside the deputy commissioner’s office. Their primary demand is swift action against the responsible police personnel.

Ramban Patwar Association chief Harjeet Singh said, “All clerical staff of the deputy commissioner’s office and the revenue department went on a spontaneous strike and held a protest against the highhandedness of the police.”

The protesters are calling for the immediate suspension of the culpable police personnel and a thorough high-level inquiry into the entire incident.
