The delegation members did not offer any details excepting that Dr Abdullah is deeply hurt over what has been done to the political class in the wake of August 5 decision. He has not talked in detail about the next course of action of the party but emphasised over a joint approach.

The participants of the meeting said he mostly talked about the political arrests and was deeply hurt. He repeatedly said that the political leaders in Jammu and Kashmir had not done anything criminal that the Government of India had to send them to jail. “He is all right despite an operation in his eye and is in high spirits,” one politician who was part of the meeting said. “I do not think he is flying to Delhi anytime soon.”

The delegation comprised Ajay Kumar Sadhotra, Aijaz Ahmad Jan, Javed Rana, Surjit Singh Slathia, Sajad Shaheen, Trilochan Singh Wazir, Bimla Luthra,  Mrs Satwant Kour Dogra, Mrs Vijaylaxmi Dutta, Anil Dhar, Choudhary Haroon, Mrs Rita Gupta and Muzaffar Iqbal Khan. The meeting lasted for more than an hour. They drove directly to the Srinagar airport and flew home.

Before driving away from Guokar, Devinder Singh briefly spoke to the media. He said the party wants the release of all the political detainees so that a credible political activity re-starts in Jammu and Kashmir. He said NC has always believed in democracy and has always strengthened it. A genuine political activity will strengthen the democracy in which people hold the source of power, he asserted.

This was for the second time since August 5 that a Jammu NC delegation met Dr Farooq. Earlier, they had tea at his Gupkar residence when the UT administration specially permitted the leaders to call on their incarcerated party leader.

NC spokesman also issued a statement about the meeting. “After meeting National Conference President Dr Farooq Abdullah in Srinagar, Jammu based party leaders today sought the release of all the detained political leaders for paving the way for a genuine political process in Jammu and Kashmir,” the statement said.

“We welcome the release of Dr Farooq Abdullah and hope the early release of all the detained political leaders including the two other former Chief Ministers Mr Omar Abdullah and Mrs Mehbooba Mufti”, it quoted Provincial President Jammu Devender Singh Rana saying.

Rana said the restoration of democratic activities has become imperative in view of the political vacuum. For this a conducive political atmosphere has to be created, he said, adding this is only possible when all the detained leaders and workers are released.

The Provincial President described Dr Farooq Abdullah as a symbol of mainstream politics in Jammu and Kashmir, saying his role in nation-building and political stability in Jammu and Kashmir has been immense. He referred to his huge contribution in steering J&K to peace and development at a time when conditions were very difficult over two decades ago.

“To a question, Rana said the future course will be discussed by the National Conference Working Committee when all the detained leaders including Vice President Mr Omar Abdullah are released,” the statement said.
