SRINAGAR: A man imprisoned in Udhampur jhail has reportedly committed suicide, media reports said. He was the killer of the son of an NC lawmaker Deepinder Kaur.

“A jail inmate, who was involved in a high-profile murder case of the son of a former National Conference legislator, allegedly committed suicide inside the Udhampur District Jail here this evening,” Tribune newspaper reported. “According to initial reports provided by the police, Jatinder Singh, alias Rakesh, son of Naggar Singh, alias, Nago, allegedly committed suicide inside the jail by hanging himself.”

Jatinder Singh was jailed for ‘murdering’ Amandeep Singh, son of a former National Conference MLC Deepinder Kaur.

“It appears to be a case of suicide. The inmate was under trial under Section 302 of the Ranbir Penal Code. At 4.30 pm, he was brought dead at the District Hospital in Udhampur,” Mohammed Rayees Bhat, SSP, Udhampur, told The Tribune. “As per preliminary reports, Jatinder Singh was found hanging inside a bathroom in the high-security prison of Udhampur.”

“It appears to be a case of suicide but things will be clear once the post-mortem report is submitted by the doctors,” a senior police official said, requesting anonymity, told the newspaper.

A magisterial enquiry has been ordered, SK Mishra, state’s Director General of Prisons has told the newspaper. “The CCTV footage of the barrack have been taken. On the departmental level, I have asked the DIG, Prison, Dr MS Lone to look into the case. He will visit the jail and submit his report,” the DGP was quoted saying.
