SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference on Friday called upon the government to clarify the agreement between JKSPDC and Rajasthan Urja Vikas and IT Services Limited, citing widespread concerns among the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Ratle Hydroelectric Project, Kishtwar, J&K to provide power to Rajasthan Urja Vikas and IT Services Limited for 40 years as per the Power Purchase Agreement

Echoing public sentiments, the party’s State Spokesperson, Imran Nabi Dar, expressed that the agreement has raised serious questions, appearing to be disadvantageous to J&K.

“Typically, Power Purchase Agreements have a maximum duration of 20 years. However, in this case, they are committing to a 40-year term at a pre-negotiated price, which remains undisclosed. There’s a pervasive sense of betrayal among the people of J&K, perceiving their resources as being compromised. The recent agreement for electricity offtake over 40 years from the Commercial Operation by Rajasthan Urja Vikas & IT Services has only intensified scepticism. The government should issue a white paper elucidating the agreement’s purpose and the benefits accruing to J&K,” he asserted.

Imran further emphasised that the government should have prioritised supplying electricity to domestic consumers, particularly given the ongoing energy crisis in J&K.

“For the electricity-starved people of J&K, is this agreement a viable solution? It’s a question that the government must address. It seems counterintuitive that, amidst J&K’s electricity crisis, the government is exporting power to other states,” he added.
