NC Will Not Back Down on Delhi Protest: MP Mian Altaf

SRINAGAR: National Conference MP Mian Altaf Ahmad on Wednesday said the party’s proposed protest in the national capital will be held as scheduled after July 15, asserting that it was the party’s “duty” to demonstrate on the issue of restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.

Speaking to reporters here, MP Mian Altaf said the party was firm on its decision to stage a protest in New Delhi during the Monsoon Session of Parliament.

“Even yesterday, the Chief Minister said it will be held at its scheduled time. So, to protest for us, it is our duty. We are doing our duty. This is a good step,” he said.

The National Conference had earlier announced plans to hold a demonstration in the national capital to press for the restoration of statehood and constitutional guarantees for the Union Territory. The party has maintained that the protest is a reminder of assurances made in Parliament and the Supreme Court following the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019.

On the sidelines of a book launch event here, MP Altaf said democracy and secularism were India’s strengths globally but expressed concern that these very principles were “weak in our country”.

“It is a pity that these things are weak in our country,” he said, while referring to freedom of justice and media.

On the upcoming Amarnath Yatra and Muharram, MP Mian Altaf expressed confidence that both events would be conducted smoothly, as has been the tradition even during difficult times.

“This is a very auspicious month. Today is the first day of Muharram. God willing, all programmes will be held in a good way,” he said, adding that the government would ensure safety and well-being of pilgrims.

He also noted that Kashmiris have always welcomed and served Amarnath pilgrims with warmth, and expressed hope that the tradition would continue this year as well. (KNS)
