Contrary to this, official figures indicate that at least 60 per cent of unaided private schools are providing vocational education to students.

Data accessed by the news agency KNO reveals that among the total schools covered under vocational education, only 2587 government school educational institutes, accounting for 11.24 per cent, are delivering vocational education.

Vocational education prepares individuals for skilled crafts, trades, or work as technicians, to enable gainful employment or self-employment with the necessary skills.

According to official figures, at least 1816 unaided private schools in Jammu and Kashmir cover vocational education.

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 places emphasis on vocational education and skill development, recommending the integration of vocational education with general education and its mainstreaming.

In line with NEP objectives, the existing Samagra Shiksha scheme has been revamped, with new interventions such as internships, bag-less days, and exposure to vocational education at the Upper Primary level supported.

Notably, the Principal Secretary of the School Education Department and the Director of School Education in Kashmir were unavailable for comment. (KNO)
