SRINAGAR: The death toll from the devastating floods in Nepal has risen to 1,200, Nepal Police said on Wednesday, as authorities continued efforts to identify victims, locate missing people and rescue survivors.
According to Nepal Police figures cited by several international media reports, 45 bodies have been recovered in Rasuwa, 155 in Nuwakot, 59 in Dhading, 348 in Chitwan, 66 in Gorkha, 38 in Tanahun, 217 in Nawalparasi East and 190 in Nawalparasi West.
Nepal Police also reported that nine bodies had been recovered in India. Of the bodies recovered so far, 95 have been identified and handed over to their families.
Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah said in a Facebook post said that unidentified bodies were being handled in accordance with the law and established scientific procedures.
Shah said the authorities were managing only those bodies that remained unidentified, while preserving DNA samples and other evidence that could help establish their identities. He added that the Nepali Army, Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force, Nepal, were assisting in the process, while identified bodies were being returned to their families.
