SRINAGAR: The death toll from devastating floods and mudslides that struck areas along the Nepal-China border late last month has risen to 1,400, while more than 5,800 people remain missing, according to official statistics released on Tuesday.
Official figures from Nepal and China show that 848 foreigners are among those reported missing.
Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority said 1,357 bodies have been recovered from flood-hit districts across the country, while 5,326 people, including 587 foreigners, remain unaccounted for.
More than 13,500 people have been rescued so far, with rescue operations continuing into the weekend.
In China’s southwestern Xizang Autonomous Region, also known as Tibet, 43 people have been confirmed dead following massive mudslides, while 519 remain missing, according to official figures.
Meanwhile, China on Tuesday sent a fourth batch of emergency relief supplies to Nepal as the neighbouring country continues relief and recovery efforts.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning told reporters in Beijing that China would continue to stand firmly with Nepal as it works to overcome the disaster and its aftermath.
