SRINAGAR: Nine migrant workers from Assam lost their lives and another sustained injuries when scaffolding collapsed at a construction site in the Ennore Special Economic Zone (SEZ) thermal power project near Ponneri, reports NDTV.
The incident occurred in the morning when the workers were reportedly engaged in routine construction activities. Eyewitnesses said a sudden structural failure caused the scaffolding to give way, trapping the labourers beneath. Emergency services were immediately called to the scene.
Rescue teams, including fire and local authorities, rushed to the site and extricated the injured worker, who has been admitted to a nearby hospital. The condition of the survivor is reported to be stable.
Authorities have initiated an investigation into the collapse. Initial reports suggest possible negligence in adhering to safety protocols, though the exact cause is yet to be determined. Officials have assured strict action if any lapses are found.
The Tamil Nadu government expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and promised to provide compensation and support. Local labour unions have called for an urgent review of safety measures across construction sites in the state.
The Ennore SEZ power project, aimed at boosting energy generation in the region, has faced criticism in the past for safety lapses, with labour organisations urging better monitoring and enforcement of construction standards.
