SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Police announced on Wednesday that they have officially charged a National Institute of Technology (NIT) student for posting content deemed sensitive to the religious sentiments of a particular community.

In a statement on the microblogging site ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), Srinagar Police stated, “Police has taken cognizance of the incident of uploading sensitive content against religious sentiments of a particular community by one student of NIT, Hazratbal upon receipt of information from NIT authorities.”

The post further stated, “Case FIR No. 156/23 u/s 295A, 153A, 153 IPC registered in PS Nigeen.”

Inspector General of Police VK Birdi, responding to the surfaced content and subsequent student outcry on Tuesday evening, mentioned that legal action has been initiated against the student involved in sharing the sensitive content.

After the incident, protests erupted in the NIT Campus and a few other colleges against blasphemy.
