SRINAGAR: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has decreased the number of MBBS seats at Jammu Medical College by eight for the upcoming 2023-24 academic year. This reduction was imposed as a consequence of the college admitting 184 MBBS students, which exceeds the officially approved intake capacity of 180 students. The NMC took this action because the college violated established norms by going beyond its permitted quota.

The matter was discussed in the Coordination Committee meeting held under the chairmanship of the NMC Chairman on July 13 and accordingly, the decision was taken to reduce eight seats of the Medical College for the academic year 2023-24, as a punishment, Jammu based newspaper Daily Excelsior reported.

The Principal and Dean of GMC Jammu have been directed to investigate the matter and fix accountability/responsibility of the person(s) responsible for the violation and submit an Action Taken Report in the matter to NMC within 15 days failing which the order of reduction of eight seats for the academic year 2023-24 will remain effective to the academic year 2024-25 also.

Quoting sources, Excelsior reported that a committee has already submitted its report and based on the recommendations of the report of the Committee, action has already been taken against the then Head of the Institution who has been transferred and posted as Secretary (Technical) in Health and Medical Education Department.
