Responding to an unstarred question in the Assembly from Chadoora MLA Ali Mohammad Dar regarding flood risks in the BK Pora area, officials noted that certain areas face flooding when the River Jhelum’s discharge exceeds 40,000 cusecs, causing overflow along the left bank.

The government said the existing Flood Spill Channel (FSC) is under technical review, but no new channel has been proposed. To reinforce vulnerable stretches, the left embankment of the Jhelum in BK Pora has been strengthened at multiple locations through various flood protection programmes.

Restoration work on the Zoonipora breach (RD 53–54 km) was completed at a cost of Rs 1.2559 crore, while a 135-metre toe wall with stone pitching under PMDP Phase-II cost Rs 1 crore. Additional work included restoration near RD 53 km for Rs 15 lakh and construction of an 86-metre toe wall at Shalina near RD 56 km at Rs 1.04 crore.

Construction of a 275-metre toe wall at Zoonipora and Shalina under UT Capex (MH:4711) has been tendered at Rs 2 crore and is expected to be completed by May 2026.
