SRINAGAR: Repeated sightings of at least two leopards in densely populated areas of north Kashmir’s Baramulla town over the past several days have caused concern among residents, with many avoiding travel during the morning and evening hours.
The leopards have reportedly been sighted in residential areas including Bilal Colony, Friends Colony, Chinar Bagh and Rangwar.
Residents said the animals have been moving near inhabited areas for around 10 days and have allegedly killed at least two sheep, raising concerns about the safety of people, particularly children and elderly residents.
Following the sightings, the Wildlife Department has deployed a team to the area to monitor the animals’ movement and prevent any untoward incident. The team has also laid traps as part of efforts to capture the leopards.
The repeated presence of the animals has affected normal life in the area, with residents reluctant to venture outside during the hours when the leopards are believed to be active.
Families have expressed particular concern about children travelling to schools and tuition centres, as well as elderly people moving around the neighbourhoods.
Residents have urged the authorities to intensify monitoring and take necessary measures to ensure public safety while safely managing the wildlife movement.
