SRINAGAR: Police in north Kashmir’s Sopore area of Baramulla district have arrested one person in connection with a case involving alleged impersonation of police officials, assault and extortion, officials said.
The accused, identified as Junaid Ahmad Gojree, son of Nazir Ahmad Gojree and a resident of Model Town-D, Sopore, was arrested during the investigation into the case, police said.
The case was registered after Nazir Ahmad Lone, son of Ali Mohammad Lone of Shahgund Naidkhai, Bandipora, approached Police Post Bus Stand and alleged that two unidentified persons had assaulted him while posing as police officials and extorted Rs 10,000 from him.
Following the complaint, FIR No. 194/2026 was registered at Police Station Sopore under Sections 308(5), 351, 131, 126, 319(2) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and an investigation was initiated.
Police said efforts are underway to arrest the second accused allegedly involved in the incident.
Further investigation into the case is in progress.
Sopore Police said it maintains a zero-tolerance approach towards impersonation, extortion and other criminal activities, and urged the public to remain vigilant and immediately report anyone attempting to intimidate people or demand money while falsely claiming to be a police official.
