Police on Tuesday claimed to have arrested a notorious drug peddler from Shumnag area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

“Continuing with the special drive against drug abuse and the sale of psychotropic substances in the district, a special team of District Police Kupwara has achieved another success by arresting a notorious drug peddler from Shumnag area and recovered 1.6 kgs of Charas from his possession,” SSP Kupwara Shamsheer Hussain in a statement said.

He identified the arrested drug peddler as Abdul Khaliq Payer son of Abdul Jabbar Payer resident of Shumnag village. “In this connection, a case FIR No. 05/2018 u/s 8/20 NDPS act has been registered in police station Trehgam and further investigation is in progress,” he said.

“During the year 2017, under special drive, Kupwara Police has recovered 4.5 Kgs of Brown Sugar, 2 Kgs of Heroine, 31 Kgs of Charas, 1 Kg Bhuki, and other Psychotropic substances and 54 drug peddlers have been arrested,” the SSP added.

He said a cross LoC narcotic smugglers module was also busted and 4 notorious drug, narcotic smugglers were arrested. “One notorious drug peddler has been booked under PSA,” he claimed. “During the year 2018, 7.6 Kgs of Charas and 500 gms of Heroine have been recovered and 5 drug peddlers including a notorious woman drug peddler have been arrested so far.”

Meanwhile, District Police Kupwara has appealed the local residents to come forward and help police to eradicate the menace from the society.

The anti-drug drive shall continue to make the society drug free which is one of the commandments of J&K Police for 2018, the police said.
