Land mafia has been eyeing a piece of land near the proposed site for International Trade Centre at Pampore, local sources told Kashmir Life.

The mafia, they alleged, is disingenuously staking claim on a patch of area that has been earmarked for constructing the ITC. A plywood factory was erected on the land previously which was demolished to pave way for the establishment of much-anticipated trade centre.

Earlier this year, a representation of the “locals” from the area had appealed the Director of Handicrafts for allowing access to “their land” a portion of which had been surrendered for the site. But sources allege it was mafia who posed as locals and farmers with intent to usurp the land.

Subsequently, the Director Handicrafts had shot a letter to his assistant director directing him to enable the transfer of land by quantifying the area along with the revenue details.

When contacted, Director Handicrafts Gazanfar Ali said that the land has not been transferred yet. “It is being checked in the revenue records whether the lands belongs to them or not,” he said.

“Previously, we surrendered the land to one person only once his ownership to land was established by the revenue department,” he said.
