Kashmir traders believe that the much hyped under-construction at The Bund is being converted into a “foot” bridge now.

The construction of the bridge near Polo View over Jhelum crossing over to Rajbagh near Convent School, popular as ‘skewed’ bridge, had come under severe criticism when its foundation was laid in 2012, however, Omar led NC-Congress government went ahead with the project.

But, on Thursday, Kashmir Economic Alliance (KEA-K) & Kashmir Traders & Manufacturers Federation (KTMF) led by Mohammed Yasin Khan revealed that Ms Mehbooba Mufti led government “plans to convert the bridge into a footbridge”.

Condemning “such a step”, Khan termed the development as “against the interests of the people”. “It seems to be a conspiracy to deprive Srinagar of proper development,” he alleged.

“We already have two footbridges in the area. What is the fun of adding another footbridge within a span of not more than one KM of the river’s course?” Khan questioned.

He said the bridge would “provide a better connectivity between the old City and civil lines and help the people to reach Airport”.

“The bridge if constructed for traffic movement would also benefit the business community as connectivity between the civil lines and the old City would be improved,” he observed.

“We appeal government to reconsider its decision in the interest of the people of the City,” Khan said adding “otherwise it will be a disaster in the making.”
