Zohran Mamdani has made history by becoming the first South Asian and Muslim to be elected Mayor of New York City

In a post on X, the New York City mayor said the attacks involved bombing cities, causing civilian deaths and widening the conflict. He argued that Americans do not want another war aimed at regime change, but instead seek relief from economic pressures and a focus on peace.

Mamdani said he had been in touch with the city’s Police Commissioner and emergency management officials to ensure public safety, adding that enhanced patrols and other precautionary measures were being implemented.

He also reassured Iranian residents of New York that they are a valued part of the city and would remain safe.

His remarks followed a joint US-Israeli operation launched early Saturday, which Washington and Tel Aviv said was intended to counter threats posed by the Iranian government. In response, Iran fired missiles and drones at Israel and US military bases in the region.

Abbas Araghchi said Tehran’s retaliatory strikes were confined to military sites and were not directed at specific countries.
