Observer appointed by Election Commission of India (ECI) for legislative council elections, Shantmanu Thursday promised free and fair polls to be held on Dec 3.

“I assure that elections will be free and fair”, Shatmanu said.
He said that he has met with legislative council candidates of different parties to take inputs from them.

“They (Candidates) suggested that local policemen (policemen residing in the area where booth is located) should not be kept on duty at polling booths”, he added.

When asked whether any candidates have brought any complaints to his notice, he said that PDP candidates from district Baramulla had complained about a daily radio programme broadcasting the statements of Coalition government.

“I’ve contacted and directed the authorities to look into the matter and correct it”, he said.

Shantmanu visited district Pulwama and Shopian to take stock of the arrangements made by the administration for smooth conduct of elections to four legislative council seats.

“I’ve so far visited eight districts in the Valley to take stock in view of the elections. I discussed with SSP’s and DC’s about the smooth conduct of elections”, said the election observer.

He also took stock of randomization of polling stock which would be deputed in these districts. (KNS)
