A foreign militant has been killed in the ongoing encounter in Bomai area of Sopore town, police said.

Reports said that after a brief lull in the exchange of fire, a body of militant was extracted from the site. However, the exchange of fire has resumed.

SP Sopore Harmeet Singh Mehta identified the slain militant as Abu Bakar from Pakistan. “He was associated with Lashkar-e-Toiba,” he said.”He was active since 2009 and was currently heading Lashkar’s North operations.” He said the slain militant belonged to A++ category.

Meanwhile, people have taken to streets in the town and adjacent villages demanding the body of the militant.

An AK 47 rifle and other arms were recovered from encounter site. “The operation is still on in the area.”

Sources said when the police blasted the house, the militant holed up inside jumped out. He was killed in the process of escaping. Sources said a soldier was injured. He received an injury in his hand.

Earlier in the day a local militant, Basit Rasool Dar, was killed in south Kashmir’s Bijbehara area.
