One More Candle Light Protest On Afzal Guru Execution

KL Report

On the moist and cloudy Sunday, Srinagar’s press colony became witness to yet another candle light protest against recent secret hanging of Indian parliament attack accused, Afzal Guru. This time, an NGO-Global Youth Foundation (GYF) came over and appealed to the government of India “to allow the family of Afzal Guru to conduct his last rites as per their custom and wishes.”

GYF, which doesn’t claim connection with any political party, expressed its disappointment and anguish over the manner of Afzal Guru’s execution. “The least his wife, young son and brothers deserved a last chance to meet the condemned prisoner as citizens,” Touseef Raina, Chairman GYF, said.

This is not the first time when this foundation made its presence felt in Srinagar’s Press Colony-changing fast into Kashmir’s own Jantar Mantar. The same foundation held a candle light protest here on November 28 last year. “We young people did the little we could to try and save Afzal Guru,” Touseef said.

An NGO further appealed to the government of India to order a thorough and independent investigation of the officers and forces who Guru named in his testimony to the courts. “We appeal for an end to the culture of unaccountability, and for the special task forces of J&K police to be wound up.”

  1. Peace with non-voilence is the strategy of GYF from its beginning, once again they showed the world that kashmir is for peace & we always condemn voilence. I appreciate the way GYF is working in such a tense situation. I appeal state & Indian govt to keep their promises & give GURU’s body to their family for last rituals.
