Hundreds of annoyed shopkeepers Saturday staged a strong protest against the “unwarranted and unethical” rent enhancement by the Wakf board under the banner of WAKF Board and Properties tenants Association Kashmir.
Shouting anti-Wakf slogans, the shopkeepers said they have been paying rent to the Wakf Board with mutually agreed upon enhancements from time to time for several decades.
“We are all paying rent to the Wakf board by affecting an increase of 15% after every three years,” the shopkeepers said. “All the tenants are paying rent as per schedule for the last so many decades without hassles and stand by that.”
Now, they said, Wakf board orders increase rent by more than 3000%.
“How it is justified,” they asked, “only Wakf board people know.”
The protesters sought CM Mufti Sayeed’s intervention to “withdraw order forthwith”.
