SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir has recorded 38,665 rooftop solar installations under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana since its launch in February 2024, benefiting 38,818 households, according to data provided by the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy in the Rajya Sabha.
As of July 22, 2026, the Union Government had released Central Financial Assistance (CFA) of Rs 298.93 crore for rooftop solar installations in Jammu and Kashmir. The Union Territory had received 84,823 applications under the scheme.
Ladakh, meanwhile, recorded 2,008 rooftop solar installations covering 2,008 households, with Rs 14.94 crore released as subsidy against 2,561 applications, the Ministry said.
Jammu and Kashmir’s 38,665 installations account for nearly 1 per cent of the 39.72 lakh rooftop solar systems installed across India under the scheme. The UT’s 38,818 beneficiary households represent less than 1 per cent of the national total of 48.03 lakh households.
Among states and UTs, Jammu and Kashmir ranked 15th in the number of installations, according to the Ministry’s state-wise data. Gujarat led the country with 7,59,978 installations, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 6,90,482 and Maharashtra with 6,83,356. Ladakh ranked 27th with 2,008 installations.
Nationally, the scheme had received 75,25,418 applications and resulted in the installation of 39,72,447 rooftop solar systems with a cumulative capacity of 14,180.89 MW, benefiting 48,02,717 households. The Centre had released Rs 27,343.90 crore in financial assistance across the country, including Goa.
The Union Government said the scheme has a demand-driven framework under which residential consumers with grid-connected electricity connections can apply through the National Portal for rooftop solar systems.
To address implementation bottlenecks, the Ministry said technical feasibility requirements had been waived, auto load enhancement up to 10 kW introduced and net-metering agreements integrated into the online application process. The entire process, from application to CFA disbursal, is handled through the National Portal.
According to the Ministry, the average time for releasing CFA is around 15 days after a consumer submits a redemption request, provided all required credentials have been entered correctly on the portal.
The Union Government estimated that rooftop solar systems installed under the scheme across one crore households could generate 1,000 billion units of renewable electricity and reduce carbon dioxide equivalent emissions by 720 million tonnes over the 25-year lifetime of the systems.
The scheme has budgetary allocations of Rs 6,250 crore for 2024-25, Rs 20,000 crore for 2025-26 and Rs 22,000 crore for 2026-27, the Ministry informed the Rajya Sabha.
On monitoring and accountability, the Ministry said the National Portal captures key implementation indicators, including applications, technical feasibility approvals, installations, net metering and subsidy disbursement. It also provides updated DISCOM-wise performance details, which are reviewed at various levels to improve transparency, accountability and timely implementation.
