SRINAGAR: More than 4,000 people involved in drug-related offences have been arrested in Jammu and Kashmir since April as part of the ‘Nasha Mukt Abhiyan’, Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat said on Thursday.
Addressing participants at the ‘Run for Unity’, Prabhat said police had registered 3,257 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act since April 11, when Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha launched the campaign in Jammu.
“Approximately 4,000 individuals have been arrested and 170 convictions have been secured,” the DGP said, adding that more than 2,500 cases had already been disposed of.
Prabhat said 288 properties had been attached in connection with drug-related cases, placing Jammu and Kashmir first among states and Union Territories in terms of such attachments.
The attached properties were valued at around Rs 138 crore, while Rs 80 lakh in cash had also been seized, he said.
The DGP further said 144 accused persons had been booked under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (IT-NDPS), which he described as the highest number recorded by any state or Union Territory in the country.
The Nasha Mukt Jammu Kashmir Abhiyaan is a comprehensive, data-driven campaign launched by the government to eradicate the substance abuse menace across the region. Under this intensive mission, the Union Territory has adopted a strict zero-tolerance enforcement approach alongside robust community welfare programs.
