SRINAGAR: Ghulam Mohammad Mir, honoured with the Padma Shri Award, formally became a member of the BJP in Jammu and Kashmir’s Budgam district on Wednesday. The joining ceremony took place in the presence of District President Budgam, Ruhullah Ghazi, a party statement said.

The statement highlighted Mir’s entry as a significant enhancement for the party, particularly in anticipation of the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Ghulam Mohammad Mir, popularly known as Moma Kana, was honoured with India’s fourth highest civilian award, the Padma Shri, in 2010 for his courageous efforts during the 1990s, when few dared to oppose militants.

The BJP hailed Mir’s affiliation as a noteworthy development, asserting, “The party gains impetus with the inclusion of Padma Shri Awardee Ghulam Ahmad Mir. In the past month, a multitude has aligned with the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Kashmir region.”
