Paras Hospital Responds to Allegations After Young Man’s Death

SRINAGAR: A protest broke out at Paras Hospital in Srinagar on Saturday after the death of a man from Pampore, South Kashmir, with the family alleging medical negligence. The hospital, however, issued a detailed statement denying the claims and attributing the cause of death to post-operative complications.

The deceased, identified as Wasim Ahmed Pathan, had been admitted to Paras Hospital on May 15, 2025, where he underwent surgery for carcinoma of the left colon. According to the hospital, Pathan was recovering well and was discharged in stable condition after showing signs of recovery, including normal bowel movements and tolerance of a fibre-rich diet.

“He was fully ambulatory and received a follow-up call on the seventh post-operative day to check on his condition,” the hospital said in its statement.

However, on the night of May 22, Pathan reportedly returned to the hospital in a state of shock and severe abdominal pain. He suffered a cardiac arrest in the emergency room but was resuscitated, the hospital added. Emergency surgery revealed major internal bleeding, and the patient was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Despite medical intervention, he suffered another cardiac arrest and died on May 24 due to haemorrhagic shock and multi-organ failure.

The hospital also noted that the patient had a known history of psychiatric illness and had previously been prescribed fluoxetine, a medication that had since been discontinued. A psychiatric consultation was provided during his hospital stay as part of post-operative care.

The incident led to emotional scenes at the hospital premises, where the bereaved family alleged negligence in care and demanded accountability.

In response, Paras Hospital stated, “We extend our heartfelt condolences to Wasim Ahmed’s family and loved ones and remain in close communication with them to provide all necessary information and support.”
