Passenger Bus Crash in Indonesia Kills 16, Leaves 18 Injured

SRINAGAR: A passenger bus crash on Indonesia’s main island of Java has killed at least 16 people, with officials reporting 18 others injured, many critically. Millennium Post cited search and rescue chief Budiono, who confirmed the inter-province bus carrying 34 passengers lost control on a toll road near Semarang, striking a concrete barrier before overturning on a curved exit ramp at the Krapyak tollway just after midnight on Monday. The Indian Express detailed that six died at the scene, with 10 more succumbing en route to hospital or during treatment.

Police and rescue teams arrived within 40 minutes, extricating trapped passengers amid a forceful impact that hurled some against the bus body, as per The New Indian Express. The yellow bus, en route from Jakarta to Yogyakarta, left five in critical condition and 13 seriously hurt at two nearby hospitals, as television footage showed emergency personnel and ambulances at the wreckage.

Budiono emphasised the challenges of the rescue noting coordinated efforts despite the overturned vehicle’s entrapment risks. Hindustan Times reported the tragedy underscores frequent road safety lapses on Indonesia’s busy toll networks.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause, with initial focus on speed and road conditions; no immediate mechanical faults were cited.
