People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has demanded a judicial probe into the custodial death of 30 year old Rizwan Asad from Awantipora. Senior Party leader and former minister Zahoor Ahmad Mir said that history of magisterial probes into the custodial deaths in the valley do not inspire much confidence and in order to convince people of justice, a swift time bound judicial enquiry is a must, the spokesman in a statement said.

“The flip flop– from registering the case in Srinagar to then shifting of the case to Pulwama has cast aspersions on the manner in which it is being handled.  Also, as per media reports Rizwan had injuries on his dead body which point to injudicious treatment in the custody.” Mir said.

Demanding that a judicial enquiry headed by a High Court Judge should immediately be ordered into the incident, Mir said that hushing up of such cases is the main reason for people losing their faith in the democratic system.

“Fixing accountability for such aberrations is the main pillar on which the citadel of democracy stands. Rather than focusing attention to issues which are beyond its mandate, the governor administration should focus on ensuring swift deliverance of justice,” he said.
