SRINAGAR

Independent lawmaker, MLA Langate and president Awami Ittihaad Party (AIP) Er Rasheed Friday asked chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and his cabinet colleagues not to burn effigy of Rawan as first they should “stop treating Kashmiris Rawan’s way or should merge with any of the organisations of Sang Parivar”.

In a statement, Rasheed said, “while mourners of Moharram were being dragged, humiliated and kicked in Lal Chowk, just few metres away, Mufti and his cabinet colleagues were busy in watching the ceremony of burning effigies of Rawan.”

He said, “while Mufti or somebody else is at liberty to celebrate Dussehra with the minority community, he must explain why does the government hurt often sentiments of majority community one way or the other. If Muslims are being not only debarred from carrying Muharram processions in Srinagar and elsewhere, what moral authority has Mufti and his cabinet colleagues to celebrate Dussehra with Sang Parivar in the heart of the city?”

Rashid asked, “if administration’s excuses atmosphere not to be conducive for Moharram processions, how could it be feasible for Dussehra celebrations in Kashmir?”

He lashed out at district administration Jammu for “allowing the radical forces led by RSS to carry out provoking processions along with arms and chanting highly objectionable slogans”.
