SRINAGAR

Expressing resentment over the unbearable stench emanating from Achan garbage dump, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has decided to register a protest against alleged slumber of authorities. The protest is scheduled to take place at Press Enclave here on August29 led by Mohammad Khursheed Aalam.

“It made life miserable for hundreds of thousands of resident’s of downtown Srinagar and its adjoining areas. The situation has worsened since the temperatures started to soar in the last few weeks with complaints of horrid stench pouring in from as far as Lal Bazaar,Nigeen, Nowshera, Hawal, Zadibal, Nowhatta, Gojwara, Kawdara, andother areas ofdowntowen,” Aalam told a local news agency, KNS.

“It is like the smell of rotten eggs and raw sewerage, and the stenches so powerful that it becomes difficult for us to go outside or even open windows of our houses,” he added. Blaming National Conference and Srinagar Municipal Corporation for making lives of thousands of citizens hostile, he said, “Currently, SMC has only one dumping site at Achan which is a 540 kanal strip of land at Saidpora near Eidgah on the fringes of old city.

“There is no system on place to control the bad odour. Diseases are spreading and health of general public is at risk,” he said and added, “The stench is the result of lack of proper management of more than350 metric tons of daily solid waste collected by the SMC which is dumped in Achan grounds—in violation of Municipal Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2000, which clearly states that “municipal authorities shall establish and maintain storage facilities in such a manner that they do not create unhygienic and insanitary conditions around it.”
