In a post on X, Para said the tariff increase had come at a time when unemployment and inflation were putting pressure on households.

He said ordinary families were already struggling with rising living costs and questioned the decision to increase electricity tariffs.

Para also referred to the ruling party’s pre-election promises of 200 units of free electricity, free gas and free ration for the people.

“From free tariff promises of relief to higher bills, what happened to the promise?” Para asked in his post, while tagging Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s official X account.

The Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) has approved an average 6.83 per cent increase in the retail electricity tariff for Jammu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (JPDCL) and Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) for 2026-27. The revised tariff is scheduled to take effect from September 1, 2026.
