SRINAGAR

Panic gripped the North Kashmir’s Hajin town after some people spread the word that police is mulling to cordon the area to nab ‘identified’ stone-pelters.

Eyewitnesses said that people made announcement from public address system asking residents to come out from their houses. The residents of Mirmohalla, Dangarpora, Kochak Mohalla and adjacent areas came on roads and amid pro-freedom slogans staged nocturnal protests.

“Police have already claimed that 160 stone-pelters have been identified and they would be nabbed any time. Keeping this in view, people came on roads to foil any attempt of police to arrest youth in the area,” one of the residents of Mirmohalla said adding the people were on roads for hours during the night.

Deputy Inspector General of Police North Kashmir Ghulam Hasan Bhat that some youth have become the source of ‘nuisance’ as they indulge in stone-pelting every day. “We would certainly arrest them as they are the trouble mongers,” he said.

He appealed elders in the area to control youth who “unnecessarily hurl stones on police as well as civilians.”  (CNS)
