Abdul Gani Lone was killed by unknown gunmen on May 21, 2002 after attending a Hurriyat Conference rally held to pay tribute to Mirwaiz Moulvi Mohammad Farooq, who was also killed by militants on the same date in 1990.

In a statement, the party strongly condemned the alleged house arrest of its president on the anniversary of Abdul Gani Lone’s death.

The People’s Conference described the reported action as undemocratic, stating that such measures hurt public sentiment and undermine democratic values.
