SRINAGAR: Police in its recent action against drug dealings have arrested three drug peddlers in a series of action in Handwara and Srinagar and have recovered contraband substances from their possession.

In Handwara, officers at a checkpoint established at Chotipora Crossing in the jurisdiction of Police Station Handwara intercepted one drug peddler identified as Parvaiz Ahmad Sheikh resident of Shalpora Langate. On checking, officers were able to recover 265 grams of Charas from his possession. He has been arrested and a case FIR number 31/2020 under relevant sections of law has been registered at Police Station Handwara.

Similarly, in another action against drug dealings in Handwara, officers at Braripora area of Handwara intercepted one drug peddler identified as Farooq Ahmad Dar resident of Lassipora Handwara. On checking, officers were able to recover 250 grams of Charas from his possession. He has been arrested and a case FIR number 36/2020 under relevant sections of law has been registered at Police Station Handwara.

Both the drug peddlers have been shifted to Police Station Handwara where they remain in custody.

In another action against drug dealings in Srinagar, officials from local police unit received a tip-off that contraband substance is being supplied in area of Boulevard. Subsequently, officers established a checkpoint at Ghat No. 08 and apprehended one drug peddler identified as Mohmmad Ayoub Baba resident of Ganzkhud Nawabazaar. While checking, officers were able to recover 180 grams of Charas from his possession. He has been arrested and shifted to the police station where they remain in custody.

Case FIR No.12/2020 under relevant sections of law has been registered in Police Station Ram Munshi Bagh and investigation has been initiated.

“Community members are requested to come forward with any information regarding drug peddlers in their neighbourhood. Persons found indulging in drug peddling will be dealt as per law,” reads a police statement.

In another case, Srinagar Police have arrested eleven gamblers from a gambling site.

A police statement said that a police party from Police Post Nehru Park raided a gambling site following an input about gambling activities in Tang Bagh Nehru Park area of District Srinagar. Eleven persons have been arrested by police for gambling offences. They have been shifted to Police Station where they remain in custody.

Officers have seized playing cards, mobile phones, golden chain and stake money of ₹55,210 from the gamblers.

Case FIR No.13/2020 under relevant sections of law has been registered in Police Station Ram Munshi Bagh and further investigations into the matter have been initiated.
