SRINAGAR: Police on Sunday reported the arrest of a conman in Central Kashmir’s Srinagar district for falsely promising to secure the release of a complainant’s brother from custody.
The police said that Police Station Nowhatta received a written complaint from Showkat Ahmad Sheikh, son of Bakhtawar Sheikh, a resident of Zahid Pora, Hawal. The complaint alleged that a conman, identified as Fayaz Ahmad Sheikh, son of Mohammad Sultan Sheikh, a resident of Sheikh Colony, Makhdoom Sahib, fraudulently obtained Rs 30,000 from him. Fayaz had falsely promised to arrange the release of Showkat’s brother, Sajad Sheikh, who was in custody in connection with Case FIR No. 55/2024 under Sections 8/20 of the NDPS Act.
The police statement clarified that Sajad Sheikh, son of Bakhtawar Sheikh and a resident of Sheikh Colony, Hawal, was lawfully arrested by Police Station Nowhatta in the mentioned case. However, the accused, Fayaz Ahmad Sheikh, exploited the situation by falsely claiming influence to secure the release of the complainant’s brother and fraudulently took Rs 30,000.
Upon receiving the complaint, Police Station Nowhatta registered Case FIR No. 01/2025 under Section 318 of the BNS Act. During the investigation, the police successfully recovered the full amount from the accused. Further investigation into the case is ongoing, the statement added. (GNS)
