SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Wednesday announced the arrest of six drug peddlers in Srinagar, Kupwara, Shopian, and Kulgam, recovering contraband substances from their possession.
In Srinagar, a police team from Police Station Nowhatta, during routine naka checking at Malkha Chowk, apprehended an individual under suspicious circumstances, a police spokesperson said in a statement.
During the search, approximately 40 grams of charas-like contraband substance was recovered from the suspect, identified as Zubair Ahmad Ahanger, son of Amin Ahanger, a resident of Kathi Darwaza.
On his disclosure, another individual, identified as Bilal Ahmad Sheikh, son of Gh. Qadir Sheikh, a resident of Tujgari Mohalla, was apprehended near Old Malkha Chowk. Upon searching him, approximately 80 grams of charas were recovered, police said.
In Kupwara, a police team from Police Station Kralpora, at a checkpoint in Khazanmatti, intercepted two suspicious individuals. A search revealed approximately 13 grams of heroin-like substance in their possession.
The suspects were identified as Aasim Sultan Sheikh, son of Mohd Sultan Sheikh, a resident of Trehgam, and Mujtahid Nazir, son of Nazir Ahmad Lone, a resident of Khumriyal. Investigations are ongoing to trace the backward and forward linkages of the drug trade and uncover any associated networks.
In Shopian, Police Station Keller acted on a tip-off about one individual, identified as Gh Mohammad Parray, son of Ab Ahad Parray, a resident of Chowan Keller, concealing charas-like contraband in his home.
A swift raid was conducted by a police team, accompanied by the Executive Magistrate, on the individual’s residence. During the search, 41 grams of charas-like contraband substance were recovered. Investigations are underway to establish connections related to the arrested individual. The operation was carried out by SHO Police Station Keller under the supervision of SSP Shopian, Anayat Ali Chowdhary.
In Kulgam, a police team from Police Post Mirbazar, during a checkpoint at Ganjipora, Mirbazar, intercepted a truck (registration number PB07AF-2124) driven by Davinder Singh, son of Karnail Singh, a resident of Rajpur Safdarpur, District Hoshiarpur, Punjab. During the search, 3.140 kilograms of poppy straw concealed in a bag was recovered, police added.
All the accused individuals have been arrested, and the vehicle used in the crime has been seized. Cases under relevant legal sections have been registered at the respective police stations, with further investigations underway, police said.
“We urge the public to report any drug peddling or other crimes they witness to their nearest police station or by dialling 112. The community is requested to cooperate in eliminating the menace of drugs from society. We assure the public that strict action will be taken against criminals as per the law,” the police statement read. (KNO)
