Police used force to disperse the temporary employees of Public Health Engineering Department (PHE) after they tried to reach the residence of the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
“It was a scheduled protest march already decided some days back and it was only to press for our demands,” a protester said.
Eyewitnesses said that as the protesters gathered near Ram Munshi Bagh Police station and started marching towards the chief minister’s residence the heavy contingent of police swung into action and used lathis against the protesting employees.
Many protesters were injured as they were bundled in police vehicles and formally arrested.
The situation resulted in traffic jam on the busy highway and after hectic efforts of police the situation was normalised.
The employees of Jammu and Kashmir Public Health Engineering Department (PHE) are demanding regularisation of their services.
