Police in North Kashmir Recover Rs 3 Lakh in Online Scam Operations

   

SRINAGAR: The Cyber Cell in Kupwara, North Kashmir, handled multiple cases of online financial fraud, a police spokesperson said.

In one case, Cyber Cell Kupwara received a complaint about a Rs 100,000 fraud linked to a migration certificate update. “The victim was tricked into transferring Rs 5 through PhonePe, which resulted in the loss of Rs 100,000. Upon receiving the complaint, the Cyber Cell quickly gathered evidence and blocked the transactions, recovering the entire amount.”

“In another case, a complainant lost Rs 407,000 after being falsely promised that the amount would double within a month. The victim made multiple transfers to different accounts provided by the fraudster. The Cyber Cell successfully blocked transactions totalling Rs 175,337, and the refund process has been initiated,” police spokesperson said.

In a separate incident, a complainant was defrauded of Rs 25,800 after being contacted by someone impersonating a dental doctor from the United Kingdom on Facebook. The fraudster persuaded the victim to share their address with the promise of sending gifts. The Cyber Cell intervened and blocked the transaction, saving the full amount.

District Police Kupwara has urged the public to stay vigilant against online scams, avoid clicking on suspicious links, and refrain from installing unauthorised apps. They also advised exercising caution when sharing personal information online.
