SRINAGAR: A city vendor was looted and the incident dominated social media. Now the city police chief has paid him Rs 1 lakh from his savings.

Abdul Rehman, a city street vendor whose lifetime saving of Rs 1.60 lakh was looted on Saturday, November 13, 2021

Abdul Rahman has been selling street food on a roadside in Bohri Kadal for the whole of his life. Last weekend, some people caught him, beat him and took away from him Rs 1.60 lakh of his saving.

A heartbroken man, Rehman has said the money looted was saved by him for his last rites. Rehman has been living all alone and has nobody to take care of him. He is almost 90 years of age.

This led SSP Srinagar, Sandeep Choudahry to pay him Rs 1 lakh from his personal savings “until the stolen money was recovered”.

Chaudhary told a local news gatherer that he watched Rehman’s video and could not bear his helplessness. “So, I decided to help him and give him one lakh from my own pocket till the burglars are caught,” the SSP was quoted saying.

Though the police have filed a case after the loot, the status of the investigations in the case was not known.
