Police on Wednesday said that the civilian Muhammad Umar Kumar, 19, a resident of Turkawangam, Shopian was injured when a mob of male and female attacked the army patrol party with petrol bombs to help the militants hiding in the village flee and in the exchange of fire between army and the militants, Kumar sustained bullet injuries and later succumbed.

Police reply has come in response to the notices sent to SSP and DC Shopian by the State Human Rights Commission after the petition was filed by the chairman international forum for justice and human rights (IFJHR) Muhammad Ahsan Untoo in case SHRC/148/Sgr/2018.

The reply states that during the CASO, top militant commander including Zeenatul Islam led group fired at the army patrol party during while as a mob hurled petrol bombs at the forces in a bid to disrupt the operation. It says that during the exchange of firing Kumar, 19 sustained injuries that was referred to Damhal Hanjipora hospital where he succumbed.

The petitioner while rejecting the police claims said that Kumar was killed in an intentional firing. “It has been seen that whenever a civilian is killed, police says cross firing or a stray bullet. Such is the worth of human life in Kashmir,” the petitioner said.
