Police Wednesday said they are maintaining vigil on “anti-social elements misusing social media to incite trouble” ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.

A police official told Srinagar-based news agency GNS that police is maintaining a close watch on internet and social media networks ahead of Eid-ul-Azha to disallow misinformation and rumour mongering aimed at vitiating the prevalent peaceful atmosphere.

“Police are especially cognizant of certain elements disrespecting the religious sentiments and action as warranted under law will be taken against such miscreants,” he said adding that some offenders have already been identified and have been brought for questioning in various police stations of the valley.

“Investigation into these offences is going on and instructions have been given to field units to take immediate necessary action,” he said.

Police cautioned the people against uploading vulgar and disrespectful audio-visual media clips on Internet and social media sites. “Various civil society, religious and political organisations have also appealed people to maintain the sanctity of all religions and show due respect to the sentiments of the people,” the police official added.
